It was so great to interview Dr. Tony Marchio -- a former Superintendent of the Appoquinimink School District -- who during his tenure saw exponential growth in Middletown, Delaware.
I've known Tony for years. We both were on the board of the local Boys and Girls Club and attended the local Rotary Club meetings back when they were held at the Club.
In addition to learning about my Middletown and other Middletowns across the country, one of the things I like best about this project is learning new things about old friends and colleagues. During this interview I learned on some pivotal moments in Tony's career as an educator and his philosophies about education.
When talking about the changing landscape of education in Middletown, DE -- and around the world -- he shared with me the impact a trip to China had on his approach to education leadership. He remarked about how the Three R's have change. Now the questions educators must ask when it comes to what we are teaching and how we are teaching focuses on Rigor, Relevance and Relationship. Is the education we are providing challenging? Is what we are teaching closely connected to the current and future needs of our students? Are we creating and building relationships, not only between subjects but between people?
I can't wait to interview him again. We couldn't possibly cover everything in one sitting. He has so much knowledge about Training The Young in Middletown, Delaware.
Thank you for sharing your stories and perspectives Tony!
